Words Their Way, Buddy Talk, Circle of Control, and MORE!

This week we started Words Their Way (WTW) in our TEAM Read classroom.
We worked on our sorts that are based on our developmental spelling level.

In our Lead Time, we worked on creating a plan to reach our goal.
We want to buy a new toy.
How are we going to earn money to get the toy?
What ways could we earn money?

Our class is in charge of creating math problems this week for #gmttc1
Global Math Twitter Task Challenge 1st Grade
Here we are strategizing how to create 3 sticks with even lengths that equal 20:

We are learning how to "turn and talk" to a neighbor by practicing buddy talk.
In this activity, we were discussing our favorite part of Ivy and Bean (so far) and our predictions on what will happen when Ivy and Bean meet.

I see some problem solving on deciding who is going to share first!

In our LEAD Time, we listened to the teacher read Fish is Fish.
We worked with our buddy to decide which of the 7 Habits were used in the book.
Our goal was to name a habit and describe why we thought it was that habit.
In First Grade, we talk a lot about explaining our ideas behind our answers and finding the evidence in the text.

In Science, we went on a virtual field trip to the zoo.
We made observations about animals describing how the animals of the same type
are alike and different.

1st Grade LEAD Time:
Today we learned about our Circle of Control. We learned that there are things that we can control and things that we cannot control. We learned that we can choose our own weather (decide if something bad is going to completely ruin our day) when things happen throughout the day.

We met outside as a grade and watched a lesson by Mrs. Comitor and Mrs. Friedlander.
We learned that when tough things happen and we let it shake us up, we can feel overwhelmed and lose control (like a can of pop that has been jiggled around). We also learned that when we choose to look at the bright side of things and focus on what is in our control, we can feel better and less overwhelmed/out of control (like a bottle of water).

We then mixed up our class between all 3 first grade rooms to Synergize with other students on filling out our own Circle of Control sheet.

Way to go, 1st Graders!
