This Week (so far) in Pictures!

This week we read Enemy Pie.
Students worked on making predictions for the ingredients in the pie.
We learned that when we make predictions it helps us to understand the story better.
We learned that reading is more than just saying the words.

We learned about synonyms and antonyms as we discussed the word "enemy."
We learned that synonym means a word that means the same as and antonym means the opposite.

As we read, we are also learning about how to describe the characters in the story.
Although it is important to remember physical characteristics of the characters, we learned
that if we can identify the character traits (how they act and carry themselves), we can make predictions about how they may act in the story and gain a better understanding of the story.

In this activity, we wrote down our own character traits.

This week we are measuring!
Students took turns measuring one another.
We are learning that when we measure, we need to line up the items in a straight line, make sure that there are no spaces in between, and that the items are not overlapping.
We also learned to make sure that we count the items start from the very bottom and go to the very top of the object we are measuring.
Finally, we learned that the bigger the item for non-standard measurement, the fewer items we need.
For example, we will need less popsicle sticks to measure a book compared to unifix cubes.

Way to go!

We did it!
Our class filled our Put Up Jar.
We earn poof balls when our entire class demonstrates the 7 Habits both in and out of the classroom.
I love seeing the joy on the students' faces as we accomplished our goal to fill the jar!

As a celebration of our accomplishment, students brought in one stuffed animal for the day.
We did some creative writing where we created stories or told about our stuffed animal.
During our creative writing, students used their inventive spelling or pulled from resources around the room. I am very impressed with how friend are becoming more comfortable taking risks in their spelling.

I forgot to get a picture in the hall, but we created our very own graph using the stuffed animals.
We learned that when we create a graph we need to decide how we are going to sort or categorize the items. The class wanted to categorize by color.
When we were done creating our graph in the hall, we discussed which group had the most and least.
I can't believe I forgot the picture!

When we came back into the room, we Synergized to order our stuffed animals from shortest to longest. We are still trying to remember that when we order we need to go from left to right.
