Mrs. Cacioppo... Take More Pictures!

Well, time got away from me this week! We were so busy learning, exploring, and helping each other along the way that I often missed the opportunity to take a picture.
Here is a glimmer of what we learned and explored this week:

We listened to our Leader of the Week read about her adventures with Gummy Bear, our class pet!

We made observations of our lima beans as they go through germination.
We learned that seeds need water, moisture, and warmth to germinate.
We were thrilled to see that after 7 days we could see the seed coat peel off, touch and feel the root and stem, and even observe a few leaves.

We also learned that nouns are people, places, and things.
We went on a hunt around the classroom looking for nouns.
Check out your child's Seesaw PicCollage to see what nouns he/she found!

This Week in Room 8 (9/26 to 9/30):

ELA:
This week in first grade we will begin our Family Unit. We will learn about what our families have in common and celebrate what makes families unique.
We will work on the following skills-

  • short e
  • identifying nouns (people, places, or things)
  • asking and answering questions about the text
  • continued practice with identifying and creating interrogative (?), exclamatory (!), and declarative (.) sentences
  • proofreading/editing sentences
  • writing an answer to a question in a complete sentence (restating the question)                         What is your favorite color? My favorite color is green.

Math:
We will work on the following skills-
  • continued practice with number sense between 1-120 (and beyond)
  • continued graphing and analyzing data from a graph using words like most, least, more, less, same, and equal
  • This week we introduce a new skill 1.OA.5.

1.OA.5 Summary:

This standard expects that students can demonstrate their ability to recognize “counting on” as the same process used in addition. Similarly, students will recognize “counting back” as subtraction.

Science:
We will continue to make observations on our seeds as they begin to transform and grow.

Rooted Mind:
We will review our roots from previous weeks (tele = distant; script/scribe = to write; port = to carry or bear).

Leader in Me:
We will review Habits 1-4 and introduce Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood.
Ask your child to show you our hand motions as we recite the 7 Habits!

Robotics:
Last week, we explored Cubelets in the classroom. Our activities this week will continue to focus on discovery as we tackle various challenges created by the teacher!

This Week in Pictures

Think Win-Win!
We learned that when we do something nice for others it makes us feel good too!

#gmttc1
Our class worked hard to problem solve on our Global Math Twitter Task Challenge.
We have been practicing reading and interpreting data.

After reading Duck! Rabbit!,
We went around the room asking our friends if they thought that the image represented a duck, a rabbit, or other. We then used that information from the graph and created three sentences that describe the data. Our goal was to use words like "more, most, least, less, equal, or same."

4th Grade Buddies:
JOY!
J- Name something that Just happened
O- One thing that you want to try
Y- Name something You enjoy

We learned what things we have in common with our older friends and what makes us unique.

We then ventured down to 4th Grade to check out our Buddies' Leadership Binders.
Our buddies taught us about the different sections and how we can use our binders to show our goals and growth in 1st Grade!

We had our Guest Readers come in today to read Dog vs. Cat.

Our Leader of the Week showed us his talent (playing drums).

We learned about a new way (#EpicPals) to enjoy books and collaborate with other students across the country on the books. We read specific books on Epic, scan the QR reader, and respond to the text on Padlet. We were adding our own comments about the text and reading comments from students in Wisconsin, Texas, and all over the place!

Today we explored new robotics called Cubelets.
You can check out a cool video about these robotics here:

We had a challenge to see if we could get our robotics to move without touching.
Many groups were able to complete the task; however, I was not fast enough with my
 video recording!

Have a great weekend!
