This Week in Room 8 (10/31 to 11/4)

ELA:
This week we begin our next unit on Pets and Animals.

Skills that we will work on this week include the following:

  • sh/th sounds
  • adding ending -es
  • characteristics of fiction and non-fiction text

Word Wall Words:
  • stop
  • fly
  • round
  • give
  • once
Math:
This week we will be introducing the following math skills:
  • Commutative Property (identifying that 3 +2 = 5 is the same as 2 + 3 = 5.
  • Associative Property (To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second  two  numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12).
  • We will continue to work on adding and subtracting multiples of ten from numbers on the 120 chart (56 +20 = 76 or 89 -30 = 59). We know that when we subtract a multiple of ten we go towards the top of the chart- number gets smaller and when we add a multiple of ten we go towards the bottom of the chart- number gets larger.
Science:
We will continue to explore various animals on Pebble Go and Kidzsearch. In the upcoming weeks we will begin researching and learning about how to write about the facts we read.

Leader in Me:
We will continue to explore "Think Win-Win" as we explore ways to problem solve with peers and help those that are in need (in and out of Kipling).

Setting Goals, Finding Evidence, and the SMART Lab!

We made reflections on what we are doing well so far this year at school and we also set up goals on what we want to change.
We used our own Plus/Delta chart to set up our own goals.

We learned more about our Leader of the Week.

We revisited the story Frog and Toad Are Friends.
We used sticky notes to write down examples of friendship.

We created our own looping code dance for students in Mrs. Deaton's class.
They will be following the code to complete the dance!

We filled our Put Up Jar!
We earned "Crazy Hair Day."
Unfortunately, Mrs. C forgot to get a picture of the class with crazy hair. :(

Mrs. Deaton's class created codes for us to follow.
We took turns following the dance moves and creating a dance video!
Be sure to check out Seesaw to see your child's dance video.

We are working on building our stamina for quiet, independent reading.
Our goal is to read for 20 minutes without interruptions by Thanksgiving.
Today, we made it to 11 minutes!

When we were done reading today, we took turns sharing our story with a classmate.
We are practicing our speaking skills and learning how to branch out and try new books!

In TEAM Read, we are busy reading and writing about our text.
We are learning how to go back and find the answers in the text.
We can check spelling and our predictions by looking back.

We had an amazing opportunity during our LEAD Time to explore the SMART Lab with Mrs. Kaulentis's class. The challenge was to create a triangle with Zometools!
Once a triangle was created, the challenge was to make it 3-D and add to it.
Check out the creations!

WOW! Our triangular creations are amazing!
