This Week in Room 8 (1/3 to 1/6)

Welcome Back!

ELA:
This week we will look back on our CAFE Goals (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary) and see what we need to continue to work on in order to reach our goals.

We will also be working on the following skills:
  • Restate the question in our answer (in a complete sentence)
  • Doubling the final consonant (words that have one consonant after the vowel) before the ending
  • Using the verbs is, are, was, were appropriately in conversation and in writing
  • Practice going back in the text to find the answers to the questions
    • Word Relationships- See below
L.1.5. With guidance and support from adults, demonstrate understanding of word relationships and nuances in word meanings.
    A. Sort words into categories (e.g., colors, clothing) to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent.
    B. Define words by category and by one or more key attributes (e.g., a duck is a bird that swims; a tiger is a large cat with stripes).

C.Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., note places at home that are cozy).

    MATH:
This week we will review skills that have been introduced earlier in the year. We will also work on the following skills:
    • Comparing numbers up to 120 (and beyond) using <, =, and >
    • Continue to explore place value (hundreds, tens, and ones) and special cases (25 can be 2 tens, 5 ones OR 1 ten, 15 ones OR 25 ones).
    SCIENCE:
We will dig deeper in our knowledge of light. We will learn how light helps us to see and how light travels.

    Rooted Mind:
Our root for the week is man, mani, manu = hand.
Please keep an eye out for words with our root. See if your child can spot the words!

    Words Their Way:
This week you will notice a gold packet for Words Their Way. Please have your child complete the three activities before Friday with the words in the baggie that is attached. I highly recommend completing one page each night. On Friday, I will be doing a quick spell check (5 words from his/her sort) with your child to see if he/she is working towards mastering the spelling pattern.

    Work Sent Home:
Any work that is not completed during our independent work time will be sent home to be completed as soon as possible. Thank you for your support!
