This Week in Room 8 (8/22 to 8/26)

Happy First Day of School!

Each week I will post on this blog what skills we will be working on at school. My goal is to have it posted no later than Monday night (after my daughter goes to bed).

Every time that I post pictures or updates on the blog, I will send out an email to the parents with a subject line that reads "New Blog Post." I hope that you find this blog useful as you ask your child the famous question... "What did you do at school today?" Now, you have pictures to look at and prompts to get the conversation going.

ELA:

We will begin our "Friendship" unit. As we read and listen to a wide-range of literature about friendship, we will be asking and answering questions about key details in the text. Who are the characters in the story? Where does the story take place? What was the problem in the story? How as the problem solved? As we answer these questions, we will look for the evidence (where we can find the answer) in the text.

We will also work on our proofreading skills as we check to make sure our morning message has sentences that begin with capital letters, finger spaces between words, and ends with proper punctuation.

We will be reviewing kindy sight words, working on segmenting (separating the sounds) and blending the sounds back together. We will review consonant sounds.

WRITING: We will be working on correct letter formation, writing complete sentences that begin with capital letters, have finger spaces, spelling unknown words phonetically (called "Turtle Talking" in room 8), and adding punctuation at the end of the sentence. In addition, we will be re-reading our work to make sure it makes sense for the reader.

MATH: We will begin our measurement unit. Students will be ordering objects by length and measure objects using non-standard measurement. We will also work on writing our numbers without flips.

iPads: We will begin iPad Boot Camp. Students will be learning about Digital Citizenship, caring for the iPads, and expectations before the iPads come home. The date that the iPads come home will be communicated with all first grade families.
